Both of these come up constantly in research before a turf purchase, and both have a real, specific answer rather than a marketing dodge.
Does mold grow under artificial turf?
Not on its own, but it can if the installation is wrong. Mold needs moisture, darkness, and organic material to feed on, and none of those are properties of the turf material itself. The actual cause of mold under a synthetic lawn is almost always a drainage problem: a base that wasn’t compacted or graded correctly traps water underneath the turf instead of letting it move through, and that trapped moisture becomes exactly the environment mold needs.
This is why we treat base preparation as part of the product, not a corner to cut. An engineered, properly compacted and permeable base moves water down and out rather than holding it at the surface or underneath. If you’re comparing installers and one quote is dramatically cheaper than another, ask specifically what’s happening at the base. That is where a mold problem actually starts, not in the turf fiber itself.
Do ticks live in artificial grass?
No, and the reason is straightforward. Ticks need tall grass, leaf litter, or shrubs to latch onto as a host passes by, plus the humidity that natural vegetation holds at ground level. Artificial turf has none of that: no organic material for the tick to live in, no host vegetation to climb, and a surface that dries out rather than holding ground-level humidity. Turf does not attract ticks the way an unmowed natural lawn edge does, and switching to turf removes one more thing to check for after your dog goes outside.
What this means for your decision
Neither of these is a real reason to avoid turf, but they are worth understanding correctly rather than dismissing with a one-line “no.” Mold is a base-engineering question, which is exactly why the installer’s drainage plan matters more than which blade you pick. Ticks are a non-issue by the actual mechanism, not by luck.
