Artificial Turf Installation in Orem, Utah
Orem's code allows artificial turf in required landscaping, with rules worth knowing before you design the yard: none in the strip between street and sidewalk, and at least half of each required area stays living plants. Starting at $8.50 per square foot installed.
What Orem's Code Actually Says About Turf
Orem City Code 22-14-13 covers landscaping on developed lots. Here is the short version, so you can plan the yard before you call anyone.
Turf Is Allowed, With Eight Standards
Orem lets synthetic turf count as landscaping when it meets eight standards. They include a soft polyethylene fiber at least 1½ inches long, UV protection on a porous backing, natural-material infill such as sand, a weed-blocking fabric underneath, and a base that is compacted and graded for positive drainage.
Not in the Strip Between Street and Sidewalk
Artificial and synthetic turf are not allowed in any landscaped buffer strip located between a public street and a required sidewalk. That strip stays living plants, and where a buffered sidewalk is used the code also calls for trees.
Half of Each Required Area Stays Living Plants
At least 50 percent of each contiguous required landscape area has to be planted with living plants. That drops to 45 percent when three or more extra trees are kept in the front or street-side yard. In practice, an Orem front yard is a mix of turf and planting beds, not turf edge to edge.
These rules apply to areas the code requires to be landscaped. Cities amend their codes, so check the current text for your address. We go through what applies to your lot during your free consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Orem City Code 22-14-13 lets artificial or synthetic turf count as landscaping in required landscaped areas, as long as it meets the code's installation standards. The main exception is the landscaped buffer strip between a public street and a required sidewalk, where turf is not allowed.
Not if the front yard is a required landscaped area. The code requires at least 50 percent of each contiguous required area to be living plants, or 45 percent if you keep three or more extra trees in the front or street-side yard. The usual solution is a design that combines turf with planting beds, and we lay that out with you during the consultation.
No. Orem's code says artificial and synthetic turf are not allowed in any landscaped buffer strip located between a public street and a required sidewalk. Turf can still go in other landscaped areas that meet the code's standards.
No, and this is worth knowing before you assume it. Utah Code protects water-wise landscaping, meaning plant material and irrigation efficiency, from HOA bans. Its definition does not include artificial turf, so an HOA can still restrict or require review of synthetic turf even though it cannot ban xeriscaping. We build to pass architectural review either way, and can prepare drawings for a submission if your board requires them.
