This is the single most-asked question we get about backyard putting greens, and most sites either dodge it or bury it under a sales form. Here is the real number.
The starting price
Residential turf, including our putting green systems, starts at $8.50 per square foot installed, with a $3,500 project minimum covering a typical area of 350 to 375 square feet. A putting green’s final price depends on total square footage, how many contours and tiers the design calls for, and which of our five putting green turf types the layout uses.
What actually drives the total up or down
Square footage, obviously, but not linearly. A larger green with simple, gentle contours can come in more efficient per square foot than a small green with tight breaks, because complex shaping takes more time regardless of total area.
Contour complexity. A flat practice surface costs less to build than a green with multiple tiers, breaks, and a built-in slope that mimics real course conditions. That complexity is in the base shaping, not the turf itself.
What you’re adding around the green. A chipping fringe, a backyard tee box dense enough to hold a real tee, and bunker turf for target lines are each their own product in our lineup, not a single all-purpose blade stretched to cover every function. Adding them expands the project, and the price, accordingly.
Site access and existing grade. A backyard that’s already flat and accessible costs less to build on than a sloped lot or one with limited equipment access, the same as it does for a regular lawn installation.
What’s included in that price
We are a lump sum contractor. The installed price covers base preparation, materials, and labor. Base work is not a place to cut corners on a putting green specifically, since an improperly compacted or graded base is what causes bumps, uneven ball roll, and settling over time, the exact things that make a green frustrating to actually play on. That work is part of the installed price, not an upsell.
What’s not included
Extras outside the core green, like a water feature, custom lighting, or extensive hardscape work around the green, get line itemed separately in your agreement, the same as they would on any other installation.
